Representative Bart Stupak of Michigan has managed to get an amendment into the health care bill that, along with previous Federal laws, would effectively would prevent low income women from getting abortions. Is this truly a good Christian action? Are we actually preserving life? Or is this more likely a misogynistic act that prevents choice for women in difficult situations?
How many people, like Representative Stupak, want health care for the women and the children they bear? Do they support adoption by more than just words? Do they let these children languish in the system after the mother can no longer care for them? Who pays for that? The children? The mother? The taxpayer? Has Mr. Stupak considered and provided for these possible outcomes?
How does Mr. Stupak help the children he supposedly cares for to be raised? How does he help mom through her pregnancy? Does he care for the health and condition of the fetus during this period? Does he care about mom’s situation; finacially, emotionally, etc.? How does he propose to deal with the consequences of his amendment?
Does this child have access to good education? Will he end up on the street? Will he end up in gangs? When you target women without means, what do you expect the outcome will be?
Representative Bart Stupak did not do a Christian thing. Representative Bart Stupak did a hateful thing. The end result is stupid. It hurts the family. It hurts society. It hurts, most stupidly for Mr. Stupak, the taxpayer. Shame on you and everyone that voted for and supported this amendment.
